Expo 2025: Nordic Energy Days in Japan
Since its inception as the Great Exhibition in 1851, the World Expo has been a platform for the countries of the world to showcase their vision for the future, including technology, culture and international exchange. At Expo 2025 in Osaka, Sweden and the Nordic countries will together be sharing our vision for a future fossil-free energy system, combining several different generation technologies and enabling infrastructure to provide a stable, green and sustainable energy to households and industry the world over.
Japan has committed to the rapid decarbonization of its energy mix, but is struggling to achieve rapid buildout of fossil-free energy sources. It is still reliant to over 70% on fossil fuels, and further implementation of more conventional green energy types such as solar, conventional wind and hydropower is limited by its geography and limited space. Aside from reaching its climate goals, increasing domestic energy generation is also crucial to reduce Japan’s energy dependency on less-than-friendly trading partners and ensuring its overall economic and national security. New, innovative technologies and methods for enabling green energy generation are therefore of great interest to Japan, and also the north-east Asian region more generally.
Sweden and the Nordics are global leaders in the green energy transition with a long history of developing and implementing novel technologies for energy generation as well as enabling technologies within grids, infrastructure and energy storage. At the Nordic pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, we will bring many of our leading companies to meet and discuss with Japanese developers, investors, trading companies, regulators, policy makers and energy users.
The Nordic Energy Days are organized jointly by all five Nordic countries and will take place over two days and two major Japanese cities – starting on the 16th of June at the Expo site in Osaka by engaging with stakeholders in the Kansai region, and on the 17th moving to Tokyo to engage with regulators and companies located in the region around the Japanese capital. Focus themes for these days are fossil-free energy, grids and infrastructure, hydrogen and ammonia, and energy markets and regulations. Event activities will include a high-level round table discussion, a large seminar and networking sessions.
The overall aim of the Nordic Energy Days is to give Nordic energy technology companies a chance to greatly increase their visibility and create new high-level entry points into the Japanese market, using the platform of the Nordic Pavillion and Nordic Expo participation to signal serious commitment and future leadership in the sector. The events will focus on open discussion, mutual exchange and knowledge sharing to create new connections, a shared vision, and opportunities for future collaboration.
The event takes place in conjunction with the Japan Energy Summit & Exhibition 2025 which is being organized in Tokyo on June 18th – 20th, giving visiting companies an opportunity to also explore the wider Japanese energy sector and make additional connections during a single visit.
